Rhetoric - Literary Devices in Detail

Rhetoric is one of the efficient method used in language that express the content in impressive manner in the form of written work or a speech. This technique is widely used to attract the audience and not allowing them to get bored, any poetry or a public speaking is tasteless without using this method. Rhetoric is the salt to the content, it should not either exceed or absent in the content that an author convey. Rhetorical devices: Irony, metaphor, allusion etc.

There are five elements used to express the ideas in speaking & writing:
  • Delivery/Action
  • Invention
  • Memory
  • Style
  • Presentation
Delivery/Action

The author or speaker must be clear in the theme of the work, at any case the flow should not change from the core of the content. One can use other things as example but the concluding thing must relate with the theme. For example: "Our flag is red, white, and blue -- but our national is rainbow. Red, yellow, brown, black, and white , we're all precious in God's sight" - Jesse Jackson

Invention

The originality of the content plays a major role in rhetoric devices, the content must convey the actual feel of the author. For example: "Out of day and night. A joy has taken flight", this shows that the writer implicitly says he is sad.

Memory

The writer indeed to use his own memory on his work, one can use any quote, facts or other's words to express his own.

Style

The usage of imagery, rhythm, metaphor will make the writing impressive to the readers. For example: Broken heart - Your heart is not actually broken into pieces, you have to just feel hurt and sad.

Presentation

The way the writer or speaker express his thoughts to the readers and audience is the utmost crucial thing in any kind of literature.
