This has been classified according to the social and political status of England. And also it is majorly based on the works and elements used by the writers of that era. This is common classification of the periods of English Literature- c.450-c.1066 - The Old English Or Anglo Saxon Period
- c.1066-c.1500 - The Middle English Period
- c.1100-c.1350 - The Anglo Norman Period
- c.1500-1660- The Renaissance period
- c.1558-1603 - The Elizabethan Age
- c.1603-c.1625 -The Jacobean Age
- c.1625-c.1649 - The Caroline Age
- c.1649-c. 1660 -The Commonwealth period
- c.1660-1800 - The Neoclassical period
- c.1660-1700 - The Restoration Period
- c.1700-1745 - The Augustan period
- c.1745-c.1800 - The Age of Sensibility
- c.1798-1830 - The Romantic period
- c.1832-c.1901 - The Victorian Age
- c.1901-c.1914 - The Edwardian Period
- c.1914---c.- The Modern Period
