Evergreen Favorite Fictional Characters in English Literature



Sydney Carton:

One of the most famous character in English fictions, the central character in Charles Dickens's novel 'A Tale of Two Cities'. Sydney Carton who fell in love with Lucie who later married Darnay. In the beginning of the novel Carton appears as a drunkard and gradually changes his character in order to get attracted by his beloved Lucie. But unfortunately Lucie and Darnay loves each other from the first sight. Even though after their wedding Carton continues his love for her and waited to prove his eternal love to everyone. At the end of the novel during French Revolution he scarifies his life to save Darnay from guillotine by their similar physical appearance so that Lucie and Darnay can live together happily. The last words by Carton is “It is a far, far better thing that I do, than I have ever done; it is a far far better rest that I go to than I have ever known.”


Heathcliff


An emotional combination of villain and a romantic hero in Wuthering Heights by Emily Bronte. This novel written in late 19th century, during that period the heroes in the romantic novels are rude at the beginning and later changes himself for the love. But Heathcliff is quite contrary to those characters. He is still famous for his unique Byronic hero attributes. 




Iago

William Shakespeare's famous play Othello is pointless without the character Iago, who speaks more lines than the hero of the play Othello. Iago is favorite for his dishonesty and he is a trickster who made Othello to suspect his loving wife Desdemona. Iago missed his rank promotion because of Othello's friend Cassios. In order to take a revenge against those two friends he creates a myth in Othello's mind that his wife and his friend are in love with each other this leads to the murder of both victims by Othello itself. 




Elizabeth Bennet

The main protagonist in Jane Austen's Pride and Prejidice fiction. The strong and pleasent female character is eminent even in this modern age, she is most admirable because of her loyality towards her love and life. Eventhough she has a craze to Darcy she refuse to marry him until she relizes his nobility. She is one of the most beloved female character in the history of literature 







Dr. Faustus


Faustus is very popular for his quest of knowledge beyond limits. He learnt everything he wants but it doesn't satisfied him so he turns his attention to magics. Tragedy plays in his life that if he wants to rule this world for 24 years he has to surrender his soul to the evil at the end of those years. In the panic of ruling the world he accepted the offer and finally lost his life after the 24 years of amusement. This story is well-written by Christopher Marlowe
